He carved a great number of contemporary portraits as well as gems copied from classical subjects. These classical gems were so skilful that they often entered collections as antique. Reference: Bonhams.

Gold ring, with an oval bezel with a layered agate triplet cameo of Theseus and the slain Minotaur in a ‘roman setting’, signed with greek initials ‘IP’ for Giovanni (Johann Anton) Pichler (1734-1791) with forked and foliated shoulders, with a French import mark introduced in 1893
The cameo is based on a Greek gem by Philemon in the former Imperial collections in Vienna, which was well known in the 18th century.
